My 5 steps to a great yoga class

  1. Set your space. Arrive early to allow yourself time to settle in. Turn on lobby music that gets you motivated and grounds you before teaching. Make sure your classroom is tidy, organized and smells good. Get what you need for class ready (water, towel, microphone).

  2. Know your students. Take some time to look over your class roster pre-class. Write down the names of your students for you to utilize during your class. Check to see if anyone is new to your class or the studio. Take extra time to get them aquatinted and answer their questions. Make connections with all students during your desk time.

  3. Have a theme for your class. Visualize how you want your class to look, sound and feel for your students before teaching. Your class time should include many teachable moments, not just exercises but practices your students can take off of their mats too that matches your theme.

  4. Teach mindfully. Use precise cues that are both informative and intentional. You should engage your students breath, then state the posture that comes next, and give 2-3 muscle action cues before moving to the next pose or exercise.

  5. Celebrate community. Take the time to connect with your students after class. Check in and see how the experience was for them and ask for feedback. Be sure to thank each person individually for coming. Discuss how their body is feeling post-class and ask what part of the body they might be interested in focusing on in the future.
